What Could We Do in Music Therapy?

Based on the goals and objectives determined during a Music Therapy assessment, clients may expect some of the following components in sessions at MIG:

  • A hello and goodbye song for structure and scheduling

  • Client or group-preferred music (live or recorded, depending on our goals)

  • Songwriting to promote self-expression and creativity

  • LOTS of instruments to play; drums, bells, boom-whackers, even accordions are in our Music Therapy arsenal! Instruments of various timbres and adaptive instruments are also available to meet the needs of everyone we serve.

  • Music and dancing go hand-in-hand, so we’ve got scarves, parachutes, stretchy bands, and more!

  • Visuals and scheduling charts to support seasonal awareness, academic goals, and IEP services. We even co-treat with other professionals including (but not limited to) SLP, OT, PT, Art Therapy, Drama Therapy, and Feeding Therapy.

What Can Music Therapy Look Like?

Our Board-Certified Music Therapists customize sessions for each client and group. Providing an environment that nurtures authenticity, comfort, kindness, and safety is always at the forefront of what we do. Whether we’re conducting sessions in the Music Izz Groovy studio, or visiting your school or facility, we’re always prepared for meeting our clients where they’re at (mentally, physically, or socially) on any given day.

Music Therapy in Early Childhood Education

Music Izz Groovy is proud to offer inclusive and engaging Music Therapy and Groovy Group (music and movement) programs to preschools, early childhood centers, Head Start sites, and homeschool co-op programs all across Northeast Ohio!

Our team of Board-Certified Music Therapists are passionate about providing evidence-based, accessible, and inclusive services to individuals of all ages, abilities, and musical backgrounds - and always with kindness.

In school-settings, our team frequently engage participants in activities such as (but definitely not limited to!) instrument playing, singing, dancing, instrument discovery, songwriting, relaxation, and more.

To set intentional goals and objectives, Music Therapists use domains in the following categories: cognitive, communication, emotional, musical, psychosocial, physiological, sensorimotor, and spiritual. We also are qualified to work and co-treat with an IEP team to help students with specific goals.

What does MT-BC mean?

All therapists at Music Izz Groovy have completed full music therapy programs from accredited schools. Specifically, a professional music therapist must hold a bachelor's degree or higher in music therapy from one of 70 university programs approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA).
A music therapist must also complete a 1200-hour internship and pass the board certification test for music therapists. The internship provides practical clinical experience while the exam tests their theoretical knowledge of current music therapy practices and approaches. After becoming credentialed, a music therapist must continue education throughout their career.
On top of certifications, our Music Therapists are able to provide a wide variety of traditional and adapted music lessons for various disciplines including guitar, percussion, piano, ukulele, voice, and more.

Adaptive Music Lessons

At Music Izz Groovy, we support music for all people. This includes people with disabilities. In adaptive lessons, the teacher finds creative ways to help the student learn an instrument. The teacher may introduce new supports that equip the student to be successful in playing, and though not exactly music therapy, adaptive lessons would be provided by a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC).

Who might benefit from adaptive lessons? We’ve seen adaptive lessons work for individuals who might need extra support in attention maintenance, self-regulation, frustration levels, fine motor skills, reading comprehension skills, etc. Music Izz Groovy is a safe place for all people to benefit from music.
